About Us: Noonamah Horse & Pony Club

Our Club's History

In 1974 it became quite evident that there was a need for a Pony Club to cater for the needs of the rural people.

On 25 Oct 1974 a public meeting was held at the residence of Trevor Melville, Humpty Doo, at which a Steering Committee consisting of Len Cant (Snr), Trevor Melville, Ron Jones, David Veal, Peter Hassell, Lesley Sullivan was elected.

All people present at this public meeting were very keen to get things moving.  Max McMillan who owned Randwick Farm very generously had offered the use of his land to hold events and run horses.  David Veal offered the use of Elizabeth Valley for training days.  Mrs Bothe offered barrels for Novelty events and John Steeples offered to make Bending poles.  Len Cant offered to lecture Pony Clubbers on the care of the horses teeth and hooves.  Lesley Sullivan, David Veal and Debbie Casey offered to instruct.

By the end of the year the club had 92 financial members and had adopted it’s constitution.

Pony Club is a youth movement and our aim is to:

Encourage young people to ride and learn to enjoy all kinds of sport connected with horses and riding.  To provide instruction on riding and horsemanship and to instil in members the proper care of their animals.  To promote the highest ideals of sportsmanship, citizenship and loyalty, thereby cultivating strength of character and self discipline.

In Jan 1975 the first Funkhana was held just after Cyclone Tracy and in August NHPC held their first Annual Gymkhana at the Darwin Show Grounds.
In 1976 land was set aside for equestrian use at Fred’s Pass Reserve.
In 1977 NHPC started to use Fred’s Pass land for rally days and in 1978 the ground was sown with grass.

And so the Noonamah Horse and Pony Club came into being, and has since grown from strength to strength.
